Semi-antique Soumak weave rug, circa 1940, hand-knotted in the Kuba region in the northeast corner of Azerbaijan. This area has a rich tradition of weaving large Soumak carpets such as this one. These carpets require 16 looms to produce rugs of this size. The rugs were made primarily for export to meet demand in the European markets. The jewel toned color palette includes dark blues, rich reds, brick and green. This rug is in excellent condition.
