Vintage Swiss Bauhaus Genre Sophie Tauber Arp Style Embroidery Pillow for sale
Item ID: 375528
Item Description
A vintage, circa 1920s, embroidered throw pillow with velvet back and silk cording. This modern application of embroidery technique was established in Switzerland at the "Kunstgewerbeschule" (The School of Applied Arts) in Zürich during the 1920s. This style of embroidery is directly influenced by the Bauhaus and most importantly, Sophie Tauber Arp.
Arp taught and led and taught in the textiles department at the school from 1916 until around 1929. It was also during this time that Arp was creating several of her vertical / horizontal compositions. It is quite rare that one finds examples of textiles from the 20s in this style which is directly correlated to what was being taught at the Kunstgewerbeschule at this time. The artist is unknown and if she were not one of the students of Arp; she was definitely a influenced by the design philosophy taught during this period.
The pillow is 13 inches square and in very good condition. There is a small break in the cording underneath; however, it seems this was the closure after the pillow was down filled by hand.
