Item Description
This delightful round coffee table is a prototype designed in 1993 by Masanori Umeda (Japanese, 1941- ). It features a laminate top in the shape of a soccer ball, with four metal legs with brushed finish and rubber feet in the form of soccer ( football ) boots. Masanori was born and educated in Japan, and moved to Milan in 1967 to work in the design studio of Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni. In the 1970s he was a design consultant for Olivetti where he met Ettore Sottsass. In 1981 he was invited by Sottsass to participate in the Memphis exhibition at the Arc '74 gallery in Milan. Throughout the 1980s he created a number of memorable designs as a member of the Memphis Group. In 1986 he returned to Tokyo to open his firm, U-Meta.
