Antique 18th c Finely Carved French Louis XV Armchair for sale
Item ID: 376923
A finely carved, antique 18th century carved armchair. The chair is a perfect example of the fined design and carpentry that was the beginning of the age of comfort. The chair's back and seat are curved and generously proportioned. The carving of the rosettes, form of the armrests and legs are exceptional with deep, relief, masterful carving. Rather than waste superflous words on just how great this chair is, I have taken lots of photos with detail shots to present the chair properly. Please take your time to enjoy the photos as the chair is really quite nice and special. The seat height is 17 inches with a back height of 35 inches.
Condition: The chair is circa 1750/70 and has had some repairs over the years. The velvet upholstery appears to be 19th century and has wear & will need to be replaced. The spring supports and horse hair padding are also 19th century. The chair's armrests need to be reinforced a bit as there is a little give at the connection to the backrest. The rosette at the apron has a portion (lower front) of its carving replaced at some point. The right front leg was reinforced on the inside. Also, the tips of the two front legs were repaired. This occurs sometimes as the chairs were exposed to floors being washed over years & years and sometimes, the bottom of the feet have lots of wear from the exposure to moisture. It is clear that this chair was greatly admired and cared for over the years as its previous owners have taken great care in having professional attention given to the chair in journey from circa 1750 to 2012.
