This 19th century marble sculpture after the influential Neoclassical sculptor, Antonio Canova (1757-1822), is a well-crafted interpretation of Paolina Borghese, depicting Napoleon's sister, Princess Borghese, reclining as Venus Victrix.
The original was commissioned by Paolina's husband, the Italian prince Camillo Borghese, following their marriage in 1804. Carved from white marble and completed in 1808, it resides in Galleria Borghese in Rome.
