Mid-Century Carved World Globe on Stand for sale
Item ID: 383511
Item Description
This extraordinary globe on stand was made by Creazioni C.A.M. of Mantua Italy, circa 1956, and features uniquely carved surfaces depicting the continents and ocean floors. Carvings are possibly made of plaster or other similar composition which has been painted. Contour lines have been carved in high relief to depict the depths of the oceans beneath a clear plastic sphere which represents the surface of the oceans. The continents, also carved and shaped with contour lines, reside on top of the clear sphere. Brass nameplates and finials decorate the sphere with names of the oceans. The metal tray inset at the base has its original painted surface in watercolor on paper, with compass (not-magnetized). We have found no signatures or hallmarks. Globe diameter is 20 in (50.8 cm). Condition is very good. There are some cracks and minor losses to the carved surface near the lower mount, and there are two minor cracks to the outer clear plastic sphere. One of the brass legs has a noticeable dent as seen in one of our images. Designs by Creazioni are discussed in "Three-Dimensional Relief Globes, Past and Present", by William Briesemeister, published in the April 1957 (vol. 47, no. 2) edition of Geographical Review, journal of the American Geographical Society.
