Item Description
This wonderful antique gilt bronze and marble inkwell depicts a chained mastiff guard dog sculpted by the French animalier, Charles H. Valton (1851-1918). It measures 11.75" by 16" by 10". Post sign reads "PRENEZ GAIDE AU CHIEN" which translates simply to "beware of dog".
Born in Pau, Valton studied un Barye and Levasseur, and exhibited the Paris Salon beginning in 1868, and later at the Salon des Artistes Francais. He became a member of the Société des Artistes Français in 1885. Valton won a third-place medal in 1875, a second-place medal in 1885, a medal at the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris, and another in 1900. His works regularly appear at major auction, and his sculpture can be found in the musuems at Castres (a lion's head), Constantine (lion figurine), Oran (a tiger and tigress), Musée Galliera (the Musée de la Mode de la Ville de Paris) in Paris (wolf following a trail), and the Museum National d' Histoire Naturelle in Paris (a mammoth and polar bear).
