Used in the ancient world to keep water, wine, or olive oil cool, grand scale urns such as this piece were what a client once called “the world’s first Frigidaire!” While smaller pots were used in the home, the very large pots featured here were actually used outside the home, and buried in the ground about half-way up their sides, to keep their contents cool. This explains their unusual conical shape: it is much easier to bury a pointy object than a square or round one!
This piece is the among the largest we've ever seen, standing some 5 feet in height, and weighing in at close to 300 lbs. Let's just say, wherever you decide to put it, there it is likely to stay. But the good news is, we've found this type of pottery to be quite resistant to the weather. Simply wrap the top so that water doesnt get inside and freeze, and the pot can remain right where it is placed, even through a harsh north-eastern winter.
