The name Pablo Picasso is synonymous with the Cubist movement in art. In the summer of 1946, while touring the South of France he stopped at an exhibition in the coastal village of Vallauris, a suburb of Antibes. There he met & became friends with Georges and Suzanne Ramie, owners of Madoura Pottery. He asked their permission to make a few pieces and was willingly given a spot in the studio to pursue his fascination with ceramics. Although deemed a craft, for Picasso the plates, jugs, vases & other vessels he created were a form of canvas. While working at Madoura he met & married his last partner, Jacqueline Roque, another artist who worked there. Picasso sought to create editions of his ceramics and in working with Madoura Pottery workshop that challenge became a reality.
