Fine and Rare Japanese Porcelain Jar for sale
Item ID: 390669
Item Description
Extraordinary jar from the Edo Period with celadon blue underglaze and polychrome enamel overglaze. Most probably Nabeshima. Museum quality speciman in perfect condition on it's carved rosewood stand. The number on the bottom is likely a collector's number and the import tag is intact.
Pale celadon blue underglaze has an ethereal quality. Note the inner glaze. The hand painted enamel overglaze varies from subtle grays to vibrant red, verdant green and lilac. Amazing work like this strongly indicates Nabeshima creators.
Under the rule of the Nabeshima clan, these utra-fine pieces were only allowed into ruling or highest class hands. Clearly this lovely piece tells a story--probably in the calligraphy on the side opposite the figures. Note the fabulous genie rising to the top on the lid via a cloud of smoke!
Above is the information I received when purchasing this wonderful jar. My knowledge of antique Japanese porcelain is quite limited, so any further information on this piece is welcome.Feel free to email.
