Vintage 1950s Swiss Design Chest of Drawers attributed to Willy Guhl for sale
Item ID: 384780
Item Description
Vintage 1950s, Swiss design chest of drawers (35.5 x 33 x 19.5 inches). The chest of drawers is particularly interesting from a design history perspective as one can see the effort to incorporate design's "New Look" of the mid-century movement in common furniture for every man. The design is a premiere example of clear, clean and honest Swiss design. The pureness of the lines are further enhanced by the high quality carpentry techniques, whereby, one is prive to the exposed joints and joining of materials.
It does have a rough hewn appeal along the lines of designs by a Guhl coheart, Jakob Muller. However, at the time; this type of furniture was very important to introduce the mid-century modern design philosophy and "vocabulary" to the Swiss market. The piece is attributed to the ouvre of Willy Guhl or at least it is greatly influenced by his early work as one can see in the lines, the type of wood chosen and especially the choice of feet which are identical to those on known Guhl cabinet designs.
