Mid-century “Mosaic” Front 9 drawer chest/dresser by famed Mid Century Modern designer Paul Evans for Lane Furniture Co. This piece is a stunning example of his distinctive Brutalist style. The piece is oak veneered with a solid wood carcass and composite material for the front with a 3” plinth. The veneer on the top and sides are beautifully matched to create a beautiful surface. The piece is in good conditions with minor wear. It will work in many different interiors because of its sculptural design.
The term “Brutalism” was coined by architects Alison and Peter Smithson in 1953 and made popular by British architectural critic Reyner Banham when he used it in the title of his 1966 book, The New Brutalism: Ethic or Aesthetic?. It sprang from a French term used by Le Corbusier to describe the raw concrete (“béton brut”) with which he worked and which was to become the material most frequently used in stark, blocky Brutalist architecture from the 1950s through the 1970s.
