Vik Muniz was born in São Paulo, Brazil and now lives and works in New York City. Muniz is best known for his meticulous reinterpretations of infamous works by artists sprinkled throughout art history such as Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Courbet, Monet, Da Vinci, Caravaggio, Rothko, and Morris. He is noted for his incredible technical skill and his deviation of traditional materials to reproduce appropriated images—for example, his use of chocolate syrup to reproduce Da Vinci’s “Last Supper” and his photographic reproductions of images made with sugar, refuse, or even dust gathered from the Whitney's offices and galleries.
Vik Muniz’s reproductions for “Pictures of Cars” after pop master Ed Ruscha’s famous series, combines concept and materiality to bring the work to a new level. Muniz pays homage to Ed Ruscha and to Los Angeles—the city he represented in this series. Muniz recreated Rusha’s images of Standard Oil stations using car parts from vintage American muscle cars as a nod to Los Angeles car culture of the 1960's. Muniz used car paint on aluminum car parts cut perfectly to size in massive scale then photographed the works. He exhibited first in Los Angeles to pay further homage to the original work and artist.
