Pair of Hand Colored Monkey Engravings By Julius Ibbetson for sale
Item ID: 373705
Item Description
A pair of rare hand colored copper engravings of monkeys from the Cabinet of Quadrupeds published in 1805 by Peter Jackson of London. The plates were made by engraver James Tookey after the design of Julius Ibbetson.
The prints are in fine shape with slight foxing natural to their age. Currently being re-matted on all acid-free matting with appropriate backing and conservation corners.
Only a handful of color engravings were made for the Cabinet of Quadrupeds. Tookey was a premier engraver of his time and Ibbetson was a highly celebrated painter of wildlife, landscapes, marine and figurals. He was one of the only artists to represent the specimans in their natural habitats which has made them highly sought after ever since.
