Description

This beautiful oil on canvas by Alexis Jean Fournier (1865-1948) depicts an  evening oceanfront with full moon rising over the horizon, with men gathered around a campfire on a rocky coastline.  The painting resides in an ornate, period giltwood frame measuring 45" by 30" by 3.5".  Stretcher measures 31" by 21". Signed and dated by the artist in the lower right corner.  On verso the artist has titled, signed and dated the work as well.  It is titled "Voice of the Sea" with mention of "Harpers Christmas", suggesting the work may have been reproduced and included in the Harper's Christmas edition of 1886. Born in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1865, he was largely self-taught and is known primarily for his plein air style of landscape painting. It has been said his career had three distinct periods.  His early works (such as this one) are consistent with traditional American landscape painting of the late nineteenth century.  After traveling to Paris to study, he adopted the style of the Barbizon School which is reflected in the majority of his works.  Later he adopted a more loose style of regional impressionism, after living for some time in Brown County, Indiana, and after his move to Aurora in upstate New York in 1903.   He soon joined the Roycrofters and became known as the "Roycroft court painter".  He is considered an important figure in the American Arts and Crafts movement because of his decades-long contributions to the Roycroft community. Fournier exhibited at the Hoosier Salon, National Academy of Design, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Buffalo Art Club.
