Description

This nineteenth century painted porcelain plaque depicts the lovely Beatrice Cenci after the famous portrait attributed for centuries to the Italian painter, Guido Reni (1575-1642). Plaque is housed within a very old velvet covered frame which has been set within a modern giltwood frame. We have found no signature nor any hallmarks on the rear to indicate the maker. The quality of this portrait is exceptional and comparable to those from KPM. Also possibly by Hutschenreuther. Plaque measures 6.75" by 5" and frame measures 15.75" by 14.5" by 2" and the total weight is 4 lbs. Beatrice Cenci (1577-1599) was an Italian noblewoman and daughter to the Roman aristocrat, Francesco Cenci. She is famous as the protagonist in a lurid murder trial in Rome. The British author Shelley saw the painting at the Palazzo Colonna in 1818 and was moved to write the tragegy "The Cenci".
